Books about the Chazon Ish ztz”l
Maran, the Chazon Ish – Part I
Rabbenu Avraham Yeshaya Karelitz zy”a was sent from On High to lead the Jewish nation during one of its most difficult eras. Until his arrival in Eretz Yisrael he was hidden, secluded, and elevated. Not many people knew him, and few knew about his greatness, holiness, and standing. The Gedolei Yisrael knew, that he was the one who would eventually lead and build the Jewish nation anew from the ruins.
The book Maran, the Chazon Ish, attempts to follow his wondrous life path, a wondrous path that ascended in an almost unrivaled manner. A soaring path which was built by decades of toiling in Torah with unfathomable mesirus nefesh, toiling until his strength failed him…
For decades he exerted himself to remain hidden, and, indeed, few people knew about him. During this period of toil and growth, he reached incomprehensible spiritual heights. However, in his genius, he hid himself completely so that people would not know him or recognize his greatness.
Maran, the Chazon Ish is an attempt to show and light up the sublime path which the Chazon Ish ascended, from his childhood in Kosava, his time with his father, Rabbi Shmaryahu Yosef, his attempt to study in Yeshivas Volozhin, and later, his marriage and the period in Stavnits and afterwards, the First World War during which he lived in Minsk and the time spent with the gedolei Torah who were staying there.
Maran, the Chazon Ish, is an impossible attempt to follow his journey, which was hidden and unfathomable to those on earth. This is a bid to reveal that which the genius of the generation, the Chazon Ish, worked hard to conceal…
The book is the first comprehensive work written about the Chazon Ish. With endless toil, all the facts and testimonies have been gathered regarding the glorious hidden period of his incredible life. This is a book which relates his life story alongside the story of the period which was one of the most tempestuous in the history of the Jewish nation.
The first volume of Maran, the Chazon Ish describes his childhood, youth, and time as an avreich. A Torani research work of exceptional depth, which attempts to unravel and enlighten the period of the Chazon Ish’s concealment and prishus. The book reveals the Chazon Ish’s amazing connection with the gedolei Yisrael, as their right-hand man, and the person they earmarked to be the leader who would rebuild and reestablish the Jewish nation in one of its darkest hours.
Maran, the Chazon Ish – Part I, sets out for the first time to tell the story of the Chazon Ish’s life from his time in Kosava, Stavnits, Minsk, and Vilna, until his immigration to Eretz Yisrael. This book is a must-read for everyone who wants to get to know the greatest of his generation – the Chazon Ish, and the tempestuous times between two world wars, a period which influenced the Jewish people until the present.

Maran, the Chazon Ish – Part II
Rabbenu Avraham Yeshaya Karelitz zy”a was sent from On High to lead the Jewish nation during one of its most difficult eras, during a terrible spiritual war. The Jews of Europe were almost at the point of spiritual annihilation by movements which worked ceaselessly to uproot Torah and mitzvah observance, and to change the face of the Jewish people from how it had existed ever since the Revelation at Sinai.
The spiritual war of the Jewish nation seemed unstoppable. One community after another was vanquished, and educational institutions teaching according to the Torah and Jewish tradition, were slowly vanishing. Against those mighty forces working to change the face of the Jewish nation, stood the gedolei Yisrael who despairingly tried to curb the flow, and stop the destruction and devastation. But it seemed there was no chance, there was no hope to halt the engines of destruction, leading the Jewish people to the edge of the abyss.
In Eretz Yisrael too, the holy land, the situation was dire. The power and control over everything lay in the hands of those who were fighting to establish in the Land of Israel, a State which would be like all the nations, disconnected from Torah, the mitzvos, and Jewish tradition.
During these terrible times, the Chazon Ish moved to Eretz Yisrael. The gedolei Torah, headed by the Chafetz Chaim and Rabbi Chaim Ozer, saw in him the leader who would go as the pillar of fire before the camp of Hashem, and who would steer the ship during the disastrous times, and shepherd the Jewish nation in the way of the Torah, as it had been handed down at Sinai.
The Chazon Ish’s arrival in Eretz Hakodesh was heavenly and miraculous, with Hakadosh Baruch Hu “bringing the cure before the disease.” He was a leader who had had no equal for generations, sent from heaven to reestablish the Jewish nation. He was the angel walking before Hashem’s camp, during its darkest hours, and beginning with the seemingly impossible task of redirecting the historic path of the Jewish nation. It appeared unattainable, but the Chazon Ish, whose entire life went beyond nature, succeeded in breathing life into the dry bones, to collect together one and then another, to rebuild and reestablish the Jewish nation.
After the dreadful Shoah in which most of the Jews were murdered, the Chazon Ish was the leader sent from Above to rehabilitate the ruins and renovate the ashes. With unbelievable siyata d”Shmaya he succeeded, almost alone at the battlefront, to overcome all the warriors against him. To redirect the Jewish people’s path of destruction, and begin rebuilding the nation in the way it had previously existed.
The book, Maran, the Chazon Ish, is the incredible story of the man who was an angel, who rebuilt the nation after the spiritual devastation and the Shoah. This is a miraculous and heavenly story, totally illogical, about the leader and captain who restored and reestablished the Jewish nation with his ten fingers, and merited raising it out of the dust and bringing it to new heights. The leader who turned back the wheels of history, halted the spiritual decline, and established an enormous generation of Torah-observant Jews who continue with pride the path handed down from Sinai.

Maran, the Chazon Ish – Part III
Rabbenu Avraham Yeshaya Karelitz zy”a, was the leader sent from On High to build the Jewish nation after the terrible destruction of European Jewry. In Maran, the Chazon Ish – Part III, we continue walking the incredible path of the Chazon Ish, an unbelievable path on which one weak man, without strength, and without other people accompanying him to rebuild the Jewish nation, is the one who with mesirus nefesh and siyata d’Shmaya achieves the impossible, and rebuilds the Jewish people.
The Chazon Ish – even though he bore the incredible and impossible task on his shoulders of reestablishing and building the Jewish nation during a period when it seemed there was no chance, or any hope to restore it to its high spiritual level which it had until several generations previously.
Despite it all, the Chazon Ish was successful in reestablishing the Jewish nation, and building G-d’s people in the holy land; the Chazon Ish was the father and heart of Israel. His doors and heart were open all hours of the day and night to help his people. Every ben Torah and every Jew felt that the Chazon Ish was a concerned father, he felt his pain, lived his troubles, and was willing to be moser nefesh to help and extricate them from their problems.
The book tells the story of the churban of European Jewry, alongside the story of the rebuilding of the survivors, who reached Eretz Yisrael broken and alone. The Chazon Ish became the father of each individual and of the Klal. With unbelievable means and mesirus nefesh he succeeded in raising the Jewish nation from the dust and reestablishing the Torah world, its institutions and yeshivos, an entire world which was recreated – by one person, the Chazon Ish.
The book tries to follow the miraculous and wondrous path of building of the Jewish people, and describe the unbelievable miracle of revival led by the Chazon Ish. The Chazon Ish worked to establish the world of the yeshivos and the institutions in their pure state, in the manner handed down from Sinai.
This is the story of the wondrous rebirth of the Jewish nation in the Land of Israel, for which the Chazon Ish was the architect, builder, and captain, sent from heaven to lead the nation in one of its most difficult periods. Maran, the Chazon Ish – Part III is the book which continues following the heavenly, miraculous path of the Chazon Ish, in which he led the Jewish nation to being rebuilt, to heights which had not been achieved for generations.

Maran, the Chazon Ish – Part IV
Rabbenu Avraham Yeshaya Karelitz zy”a, was the leader sent from On High to the Jewish people during one of its most terrible periods, and was the angel who established, built, and raised it up, and merited tremendous siyata d”Shmaya to build an entire world of Torah, yirah, and avodas Hashem.
The Maran, the Chazon Ish series is an attempt to see, from a distance of thousands of light years, the incredible, lofty, and concealed figure, of the leader of the generations, father of the Torah world, who built from top to bottom the world of Torah and chinuch, and illuminated the Torah of the entire Land of Israel and of the entire world, with the pure light of Torah.
In Maran, the Chazon Ish – Part IV, we continue following the Chazon Ish, seeing how he continued building the Torah world in Eretz Hakodesh after the terrible churban in Europe, how he worked to establish more and more yeshivos, and in essence, reestablished the entire world of Torah.
The Chazon Ish is the person who imbued the Jewish nation with the fiery aspiration of cleaving to Torah and having mesirus nefesh to remain in G-d’s house forever – “that I will sit in the House of Hashem all the days of my life.” He established the world of the kollelim, and empowered tens of thousands of men toiling in Torah throughout Eretz Yisrael and the world, all cleaving to and studying Torah all their lives.
The Chazon Ish toiled to establish an entire world of taharah throughout the Land of Israel. With unbelievable toil and mesirus nefesh, he succeeded in illuminating the light of taharah (purity) throughout the country, in a manner which no one else had ever done. With mesirus nefesh he merited great siyata d’Shmaya, when the world of taharah was established as directed by the Chazon Ish.
Aside from his being the builder, leader, and establisher of the world of Torah and chinuch, and alongside his fight to safeguard the walls of Torah and Judaism, the Chazon Ish was a loving, concerned father to every individual. Every person – a ben Torah or a baalabos, felt that he cared for him like an only son. He was the heart of the Jewish people, and with his concern for every individual – he felt their pain, their troubles, and worked tirelessly to extract them from their difficulties until they were on the right road.
The Chazon Ish, the leader the likes of which had not existed for generations, was the protective wall of the Jewish nation with him guarding the remnant of the nation from plots to uproot the Torah, and change the face of the Jewish people. He was the great general who called out “Whoever is with G-d, come to me” and gathered the few souls who remained, and succeeded in breathing the breath of life into the smoking remnants, and set up tens of thousands in legions walking in the way of the Torah and tradition, in quantity and quality which had not existed for generations.
In Maran, the Chazon Ish – Part IV, we are exposed to the lofty lights of his halachic rulings, the ways in which he behaved towards the public and individuals, the light of the Chazon Ish, his guidance and advice which emanated from the sublime holy palace in which he lived. These lights will illuminate, for the coming generations too, the clear, pure, and untainted light of the Torah in its purity – the Torah’s light as it was handed down from Sinai.
The Chazon Ish illuminated the light of pure emunah to the public and the individual. A long and important chapter in this book focuses on his clear philosophy regarding emunah and bitachon. The light of the Chazon Ish’s emunah which possesses the power to illuminate the way for the Jewish nation.
The Chazon Ish, alongside his concern for the community, made sure to establish more and more Jewish homes, Torah homes which would continue the heritage of the previous generations. A special chapter in our book is dedicated to his ways, guidance, and advice regarding shidduchim and marriage.
The series Maran, theChazon Ish, is an attempt to bring some of the light of the great light – the Chazon Ish – to our generation, a light which will light up the way to the Jewish nation for matters regarding both individuals and the wider community. A light which will continue to light up the path to the Torah world which follows him in Eretz Yisrael and the entire world.

Hachozeh MiLita [The Visionary from Lithuania]
Rubin Mass Publishing House, Jerusalem
Author: Chaim I. Kolitz
The Visionary from Lithuania. Rabbenu Avraham Yeshaya Karelitz. The last of the generation’s giants. Not many know his name, but who has not heard of the Chazon Ish, who became a legend in his own lifetime and was synonymous with the wisdom of Torah and the Torah of life?
The Visionary from Lithuania – His Torah was mussar [ethical teachings], and his mussar was Torah. The chapters before us are milestones in how he behaved. Regarding his biography, we were helped with personal experiences, since the author merited being a frequent visitor in his home. Likewise, we gathered “small pebbles” which are sometimes no less important than the well-known “milestones.” The Chazon Ish was a wonder worker, and wonders and miracles were frequently experienced with him. He did not pride himself regarding them, he didn’t even consider them anything special. Sometimes it seems as if he hid himself behind wonders so that people would not get to know him. The author does not congratulate himself on having understood what the Chazon Ish did and said; it is enough for him if he gained even an inkling.
Maran Rabbi Avraham Yeshaya Karelitz conducted himself with incredible consistency from his childhood until his final days. While the unexpected foundation of his approach was also clear. His wish for truth guided him from within. Truth is a fruit which emanates from the source, and therefore it always carries a dimension of renewal and an element of surprise.
