Maran, the Chazon Ish ztz”l
Rabbi Avraham Yeshaya Karelitz, known as the Chazon Ish after his series of holy books, was one of the greatest rabbis of recent generations and one of the most prominent poskim whose decisions in Jewish law were accepted throughout the Jewish world.
His fame began to spread a little prior to the First World War, and for close to three decades, he shaped and guided the path of chareidi Judaism during stormy periods, and while facing world-shaking changes.
Although the Chazon Ish did not hold any official rabbinical position, his home in Bnei Brak was a magnet for every question in halachah and hashkafah, and the greatest Torah giants sought out his decisions as someone would ask the word of G-d.
The Chazon Ish’s multi-faceted character, narrates not just his own story, but also that of an entire generation who saw the Jewish nation built up, destroyed, and reborn. As the shepherd of Israel, the Chazon Ish was the redeeming angel in the lives of thousands of survivors of the camps and tens of thousands of those who came to live in Eretz Yisrael, and who searched for physical and spiritual support to rehabilitate the ruins of their world.
In the Jewish nation’s collective memory, the Chazon Ish has been etched forever, as a shepherd and leader, who was a Torah giant and the greatest posek, the father of the yeshivos and of family purity, a man of G-d who was separate from the world, and a poet with ruach hakodesh. The father of the Jews and the one who loved them, who fought their wars and battles, as well as the person who set the boundaries of chareidi Judaism in the new reality in Eretz Yisrael.
It is only natural that despite the many years since his passing in 5714 (1953), the curiosity and desire to glimpse at his life story and look into his hidden paths still burns strong. Much has been related and much has been written, but still every period brings a wealth of as-yet unrevealed new memories.
The Home of the Chazon Ish has set itself the task of opening up a window to this glorious world, and making it accessible to all sectors of the public, so that every individual will be able to be inspired by it regarding his own world and spiritual challenges.
