The Chazon Ish’s yahrzeit
The yahrzeit date: 15 Cheshvan
His burial site: In the Beis Hachaim Shomrei Shabbos, Bnei Brak
On Friday night, 15 Cheshvan 5714 (1953), the lights went out. Maran Rabbi Avraham Yeshaya Karelitz ben Rabbi Shmaryahu Yosef zy”a, author of the Chazon Ish, was summoned to the heavenly academy at the age of 75, without having merited to leave descendants.
The Chazon Ish woke up at 2 a.m. and told the bachur who was staying with him in his room that he didn’t feel well. The bachur immediately woke up the Steipler, Maran Rabbi Yaakov Yisrael Kanievsky ztz”l, who was his brother-in-law and slept in the next room, and he ordered him to run and call his private doctor. However, he passed away before the doctor arrived.
The next day, Sunday, the funeral of the gadol hador took place, with thousands accompanying him, crying bitterly over the loss of the person who was the glory of his generation and who had established the Torah world in Eretz Yisrael. He was buried in the Beis Hachaim Shomrei Shabbos in Bnei Brak.
Every year, on his yahrzeit, thousands of people of all kinds, from all over Israel and the Jewish world, come to visit his grave, daven, and ask for the needs of the community and individuals. The power and segulah of his burial site, to shower mercy on those who entreat at his grave, has been passed on from one person to the other. There are also many stories of yeshuos, of childless women who had children, and sick people who were healed, and many who merited having all their heart’s desires fulfilled for the good.
In recent years, a tefillah and cry by hundreds of students of the Talmud Torah Tashbar in Bnei Brak – which was established in the Home of the Chazon Ish – has been held on the yahrzeit, with a tefillah for yeshuah and mercy emanating from the power of the tefillah of tinokos shel beis rabban. Those who merited having their name mentioned at the tefillah have experienced amazing yeshuos, beyond nature.
